Approximately 20 miles from Fredericksburg sits the quaint town of Harper, Texas. Harper is an active and thriving community of large ranches and homes. Many of the townspeople are fourth and fifth generation families; however, new comers are discovering the charm, beauty, and simplicity that Harper offers.
Harper ISD contains an elementary school, middle school and high school. Harper Elementary School was named an exemplary campus by the Texas Education Agency, while Harper Middle School and Harper High School were both named as recognized campuses.
The community library was established in 2004 and, in addition to a large selection of books and tapes, also offers classes such as English as a Second Language and Adult Literacy programs.
Harper has places of worship for almost every type of faith as well as Boy and Girl Scout troops, American Legion, Lions Club and Historical Society are all opportunities for residents in which to participate.
Harper's community Park will be honored with an historical marker in 2009, is widely used by area residents, and features a historic museum. On Labor Day weekend Harper celebrates Frontier Days and Rodeo with people coming from near and far. There are arts and crafts booths, kids fishing contest, as well as domino games and washer pitching contests. In addition to all the activities held on the grounds of the park, a lively parade marches down the Main Street and a full Texas rodeo ensues. There's always the opportunity to kick your heels up to a well-known band in Harper's authentic dance hall.
And no community can be complete without a fire department and Harper is no exception. Harper's Volunteer Fire Department has been serving Harper, Texas and the surrounding Hill Country area since 1940.
